*protip: printing these signs at 11×17 will be cheaper than a bigger size, but copy shops like Staples and FedEx can do either for you. You can also print large signs at home and tile them together like a puzzle. Just takes a little patience, a long ruler, some tape and a sharp exacto. Here is a good tutorial for word and for photoshop
I’ve been inspired by the Women’s March sign design I’ve seen on instagram the last couple days. I need a digital flip board for all I want to say, picking one statement is so hard. I’ll be at the Women’s March in Boston with my 6 yr old son and my husband. Enjoy your right to peaceful protest!

]]>Beautiful bleeding color always seems simple. My own watercolor trials have proven it the opposite. You need to be patient enough to let the medium do it’s own thing, something the graphic designer in me can hardly handle. Each time I paint it is a lesson in releasing control. Here are some beautiful examples that have been sitting in my pinterest inspiration board for too long.

]]>I’ve been researching athletic/Olympics graphic design as we work on the branding for our Run Ink. The 1968 Mexico City Olympics branding is my design happy place. The simple, strong logo and icons were applied to everything from stadiums to sun hats, each application totally considered. What a dream project to work on as a young designer.
The 1968 Olympic branding was designed by graphic design icon Lance Wyman. (Visit his website/amazing portfolio).

To Pack and Wear:
2 skirts
2 jerseys or leotards
1 pullover sweater
2 pair shoes
stockings
bra
nightgown, robe slippers
cigarettes
bourbon
bag with: shampoo, toothbrush and paste, Basis soap, razor, deodorant, aspirin, prescriptions, Tampax, face cream, powder, baby oil
To Carry:
mohair throw
typewriter
2 legal pads and pens
files
house key
This is a list which was taped inside my closet door in Hollywood during those years when I was reporting more or less steadily. The list enabled me to pack, without thinking, for any piece I was likely to do. Notice the deliberate anonymity of costume: in a skirt, a leotard, and stockings, I could pass on either side of the culture. Notice the mohair throw for trunk-line flights (i.e. no blankets) and for the motel room in which the air conditioning could not be turned off. Notice the bourbon for the same motel room. Notice the typewriter for the airport, coming home: the idea was to turn in the Hertz car, check in, find an empty bench, and start typing the day’s notes.

In Michelle’s own words:
I first came across JHill Design on a blog back in 2010. I loved her “Places I’ve Never Been” series, and was immediately drawn to her Bangkok print because I had studied abroad there, and then lived there for a year after college. While poking around the website, I noticed the “Personalize” section with examples using different city patterns to memorialize engagements, weddings, births, etc., and I thought that one of these pieces would make such a nice wedding gift! I love to give personal gifts when I can, especially to commemorate special occasions like weddings. I gave my first print to a couple in 2010, and since then I would say my now husband and I have given at least 10 prints as wedding gifts. I love choosing a pattern based on where the wedding is being held, the wedding colors, or something that is special and meaningful to the couple. And then I try to personalize the text to match the couple as well. The husband-to-be of one couple even said that the thing he was most excited for about his wedding (besides marrying his fiancé of course) was getting a print from me and my husband! He couldn’t wait to see what we picked out for them. This same couple had all their belongings in storage for a few months while house hunting, and their JHill print was the only piece of art they brought to hang in their temporary house.
I continue to give JHill prints as wedding gifts (three weddings this year!) and hope to be able to continue the tradition as our friends start to have babies, anniversaries, and special trips. It’s so fun for me to choose something personal for the recipients, which is easy thanks to the variety of prints Jennifer has created. And I know our friends appreciate the time and thought that went into choosing something unique just for them that no one else will have. Then each time they look at it, they can remember the special day and the celebration with all their loved ones. The only downside is that no one has given one to me and my husband! Maybe I’ll get him one as an anniversary gift one year. :o)
Thank you!
-Michelle
We have been asked for a few years to make a Boston Marathoner Map Print and we are finally doing it. The cool thing is that we are personalizing our Boston Marathoner Map Print for the runners.
The idea came after my friend Holly had us do a series of Personalized Map Prints for her Marathon-running sister-in-law. It was really fun to do and the story the prints tell of travel and athleticism is really inspiring. We loved making the above prints for Tenely, here is a little about her running life:
“I’m Tenley Ludewig, 39, and I’ve been running since I started track in middle school. I ran my first marathon at 28 when I learned a number of my friends had run them and I wanted to see if I could do one as well. My first was the Marine Corps Marathon in my hometown of DC and it was memorable not only because it was my first but because my family all came out to cheer me on. In the last five years, I have trained with Capital Area Runners, a group with a very established coach. I have completed three more marathons during this time. I hate training in the winter, so I have not raced Boston yet, but I will one day when I get a thick skin. I enjoyed the last six miles of Boston helping my friend come in back in 2012 and that was exhilarating.”
]]>I started with watercolor. Here is what I learned:
1. It’s hard
2. I’m a massive control freak
3.There is no controlling watercolor (for the beginner at least). It’s basically the opposite of working in illustrator for me.
As fate would have it my new studio mate is illustrator extraordinare Julia Denos. We have spent afternoons painting together, with her teaching me painting tricks and I educating her on InDesign and going to a spa. I have loved every minute of it. I’ve scanned these watercolor paintings and work will them into a totally new design for the Fairbanks, Alaska pattern – an imagined vacation to see the aurora borealis. And I’ll keep on painting, because I’ve barely scratched this surface.
One night, while laying in bed perusing graphic design on Pinterest, (a favorite pre-bedtime activity), I came across the work of graphic designer Kellyn Walker. I was so inspired! I’ve been killing my creative block by incorporating more handmade elements, scanned objects and collage-ness to my patterns and designs. She does it so very well. Check out her very inspiring Pinterest boards.
]]>Last month I had surgery and spent about a week and a half sleeping off pain killers and watching movies. I have been going through a bit of a creativity crisis and watching so many great process movies and biopics has really helped. Here are some of my favorites that I watched while convalescing.
]]>1. BILL CUNNINGHAM’S NEW YORK // I’ve watched this multiple times and never tire of it. “Fashion is the armor to survive the everyday life”. (netflix)
2. BASQUIAT // The story of Basuait’s rapid rise to fame. Plus David Bowie puts in an amazing performance as Andy Warhol. (netflix)
3. SCATTER MY ASHES AT BERGDORF’S // The history of the store and the making of their holiday windows peppered with interview from fashion’s frontrunners. (netflix)
4. GREGORY CREWDSON, BRIEF ENCOUNTERS // The process behind the making of Crewdson’s elaborate movie-esque photos. (netflix)
5. MARC JACOBS + LOUIS VUITTON // My favorite all time process movie. Watch Marc design multiple collections and throw a killer halloween party. I’ve watched this a billion times. (youtube)
6. THE RACHEL ZOE PROJECT // I am SO SAD that this show was cancelled. I love how honest Zoe is, especially in the last season as she becomes a working mom, insecure in her work and trying to balance everything. I totally relate. Plus she is quite funny and the fashion is to die for. (amazon)
Any creative documentaries that I missed that I need to see? let me know!

]]>Judy Garland was a star from such a young age, (can you get a “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” with more yearning than hers?), and was told that she wasn’t enough much too often. From the time she was a wee one up until the (too young) age of her death she was such a strong beauty – despite whatever those studio execs thought. The “Meet Me in St Louis” star’s look is my favorite and personal go to: A strong, red lip (my favorite is Sephora’s Cream Lip Stain in Always Red), a dark brow and lots of mascara, (throw in a pair of falsies for special occasions).
]]>1. ROSEBUD: (Virginia-Highlands/Morningside) This great little neighborhood restaurant has some of the best food in the city with many farm-to-table selections. In fact there is a farmers market every Saturday in their parking lot where the purchase most of their food. I use to live right down the street from Rosebud and would seriously eat there at least once a week. The enchanted mountain springs trout is my favorite dish in the whole world!!!!

2. TWO URBAN LICKS (Midtown/PonceyHighlands) Very cool, big warehouse restaurant. Great food with a little southern fire to it. The restaurant also showcases a gorgeous, huge Todd Murphy painting. Todd Murphy is on of my favorite painters and I swear one day I will have one hanging in my home.

3. YOFORIA: (Virginia-Highlands/Morningside) – another neighborhood favorite and right across the street from Rosebud. WAAAAYYYY better than Pinkberry and with only 5 grams of sugar and ounce you can eat your heart out.

4. HORSERADISH GRILL (Buckhead) – Even though it is technically in Buckhead it is tucked away in a beautiful neighborhood setting. A favorite for years of my whole family (we held my mothers 60th birthday there) it is across from the beautiful Chastain horse stables. A little country club chic and a little casual southern elegance, this place it perfect for any group. They have a killer trout dish as well and a lovely outdoor patio.

No vacation is complete without shopping.
5. GRAMERCY HOME (Buckhead) – Love love love this store. I have done multiple photoshoots for them and they always have the best things, I could go on, but check my previous blog post and post, to see for yourself.

6. PEICES (Buckhead) – I am sure most of you have heard of Peices and the uber chic owner Lee Kleinhelter. The little shop is perfectly curated with all those coveted interior design goodies you see in every magazine. Everything is totally lust worthy.
Photo via Manner of Style. Check out this blog post about Peices for some amazing shop pics.
7. B BRAITHWAITE (Howell Mill area) – World’s best baby store. The owners are a mother/daughter team (I went to college and am good friends with the daughter Chaffee, so please tell them hi if you go in). Their shop is gorgeous and the pristine white decor, makes you feel as though raising a baby will be the most wonderful, blissful event. When the baby challenges do come, they have an awesome blog, and a rolodex full of experts to help. Oh, and their cool and modern Kiawah Island beach house was in April’s Veranda magazine.
Photo via Sovereign, which has a great round up of small boutiques in Buckhead.
8. LABELS RESALE BOUTIQUE (Buckhead) – Do not judge a shop by its website. This is a great little consignment shop (hit or miss as with all consignment shops) but I have gotten some great stuff over the years.

P.S. I would recommend approaching Atlanta by neighborhood. Each one has it’s own little feel and great shopping and food. Otherwise you will spend half your day driving…oh and always use back roads if you can. Most Atlantans, who live in the city, avoid the highways like the plague.
THANKS to our dear Sarah for a great round up!

I’ve yet to see the movie or read the book, but I know it includes everyone’s classic tell-off “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.” This summer we have an intern working for us who is really into hand-written type. Brittany and I decided to collaborate on a Atlanta print / GWTW inspired screensaver. Click here to download and brighten up your desktop.
